April Showers Bring May Flowers

Somewhere part of the way through March, a hint of spring was in the air. Waves of warmth and longer days coaxed the trees to wakefulness and tiny leaves began to make their appearance. Like flickers of green flame, they began to lick across the trees here and there; unfurling suddenly in delightful green surprises.

Reaching for my stainless steel teapot one day, I got my first surprise when I noticed a swath of baby leaves, electric green against a jubilantly blue sky, reflected across the entire teapot. After that, my daily coffee or tea taken outside gifted me with glimpses of the rising tide of spring reflected in the lid of my french press or the walls of my coffee pot. The patterns of the season.

Each day another few trees flush out in vibrant joy-fires of dancing leaves adding to the canopy until it looks like rolling waves of green. However, the highlight, the crashing of the waves of spring– is when out of nowhere trees erupt into bloom! Nothing lights up the landscape more than a waterfall of blossoms on a towering weeping cherry, or the fireworks of a group of ornamental cherry trees! I love the way dogwood blossoms seem to float in foamy shelves of white and pink in the forest. Or the way redbud blossoms shower the ground in hot pink confetti and mystical tree wisteria takes over an overgrown forgotten corner.

Dramatic Spring is coquettish and moody. She arrives on the scene with a queenly flourish and makes herself known with teases of warmth, hints at new life, sudden freezes, long grey days of heavy rain, followed by astonishingly mild days filled with golden sunlight and the bluest of skies. She comes singing the songs of all the birds and daily flaunting new garments of the showiest of blossoms. Between fitful showers and exuberant flowers, she’s the star of her own show and you can’t help but love her and bask in her glow.
